layer-you-skincare

Considering that the skin on your face varies in thickness from zone to zone, measuring in at way under one millimetre in some places and not much over one millimeter in others, it’s
perhaps surprising that we can layer so much skincare onto such a frail canvas. But that’s
exactly what’s going on, with up to eight layers of skincare taking place in the strictest regimes
.

Here’s How to Layer Your Skincare:

  1. Cleanser
  2. Toner
  3. Spot cream
  4. Serum
  5. Eye cream
  6. Moisturiser
  7. Oil
  8. SPF (sunscreen)

The importance of layering your skincare in the correct order comes down to the fact that this tried and tested layering system gives your skin every chance of being fully ready to absorb the next layer of care. If layered out of order, your skin may not be able to fully absorb the next layer or the layer after, or the layer after that, making the whole process a little redundant (no matter how attentive you may think you are being towards the health of your skin).

How Much Product Should I Apply?

In most cases, you’re looking to apply an amount of product that would be comparable in 3D size to something between a blueberry and a raspberry, with two notable exceptions. First, the skin on the eyelids is the thinnest skin on the face. This means you only need about the amount of a pomegranate seed. Second, SPF (sunscreen) should always be applied liberally. In this case, you should be looking to use an amount about the size of a cherry.

How to Avoid ‘Piling’…

Avoid Piling

Firstly, if you’ve never heard the term before, you may be wondering to yourself, ‘what’s piling?’ The answer is that piling is the name given to those small beads of moisture that appear on the surface of your skin when saturation levels are reached. This is your skin telling you that it’s had enough skincare for one sitting and cannot absorb any more skincare product (at this stage, you’ll literally be wasting your money if you keep applying even the most lightweight of products to your face).

The way to avoid pilling is simple. Leave at least 4-5 minutes between the application of one product and the follow-up application of the next product. This should give your skin ample time to fully benefit from each skincare layer without any sign of piling.
